San Diego houses are built to open. Sliding walls stack away, courtyards read as rooms, and the glazing carries the whole west elevation. That is exactly what makes conventional privacy awkward: blinds and shades on a 20-foot slider undo the architecture they were installed to protect.
Switchable glass keeps the opening intact. Clear when the view matters, private in under a second when it does not, with the daylight still in the room. On the coast we also plan around the marine layer and salt air. Switchable film and laminated panels are interior-side assemblies, so the exposed exterior glazing and its coatings are untouched.
In San Diego both formats matter: film for the glass already framing the view, laminated panels for the sliding walls still on the drawings.
Switchable smart glass is built around a PDLC layer. Polymer dispersed liquid crystal. With power applied, the crystals align and light passes straight through: the glass reads as ordinary clear glazing. Switch the power off, and the crystals scatter light, turning the glass private. The change takes under a second, with no moving parts and nothing to open or close.
